French manufacturer, Peugeot, is part of the giant PSA Peugeot Citroen group which today is the second largest vehicle manufacturer in Europe.
The family business that preceded the current Peugeot company was founded 201 years ago in 1810. On 20 November 1858, Emile Peugeot applied for the lion trademark and the company produced its first automobile in 1891 making one of the world’s first car manufacturers. However, due to a major family disagreement, Armand Peugeot decided to break away from his family’s business concerns in the manufacture of coffee mills and bicycles to found Société des Automobiles Peugeot in 1896.
The company was originally based in Sochaux in France and it retains a large manufacturing plant there today along with the adjacent Peugeot Museum. Peugeot continues to be a major manufacturer of scooters but it is the production of cars and vans for which the marque is best known.
Today’s Peugeot range encompasses every aspect of the market and incorporates a large number of award-winning models, with each featuring cutting-edge design and attractive styling. Peugeot is also a leader in electric vehicle technology and a range of electrically-powered models are being planned, with the first being the recently-launched iOn.
